The participants of this year’s Jazzfruit Contest taking place as a part of the 9th Mladí ladí jazz Festival will compete in two categories – Czech and International. Czech bands can partake in both categories. “Compared to other contests, Jazzfruit is unique particularly in the freedom we give to bands and projects – it is not necessary to come up with an interpretation of specific tracks or specific styles, nor do we specify requirements for instrument line up or the need to showcase exclusively their original production, even though it is a benefit. We do not set boundaries; in terms of perceiving jazz, we rather want to break them. Anyone who considers their project to be jazz and meets formal age requirements may apply. Based on the panel’s vote, we will choose the winner of the Czech category and the best soloist of the evening. For the International category, the winner will be announced again based on the panel’s vote but with the fifth vote being up to the audience present at the finale in Jazz Dock on April 11,” explains Jan Gregar on behalf of the festival organization team. The finale will culminate in a performance of the jazz-rock’n’roll The Rad Trads presenting their killer driving groove and infectious melodies with unmistakable punk energy.
The winners will be chosen by a professional panel composed of experts from various music industry areas, including Václav Vraný from Czech Radio Vltava, Zdeněk Bína from the minus123minut band, composer Petr Wajsar and Jan Gregar for the Mladí ladí jazz Festival. The winner of the Czech category wins recording time at the leading jazz recording studio Svárov as well as an opportunity to perform in Prague as part of the International Jazz Day on April 30 and at allied jazz festivals abroad. The winner of the International category receives a € 1,000 voucher for the purchase of music equipment in the kytary.cz store. The band to finish second receives an analog synthesizer by Novation and the third band is awarded a professional microphone by Lewitt from our partner Kytary.cz
The Jazzfruit Contest has a nine-year tradition with an impressive array of previous years’ winners, including Ochepovsky, Ľubomír Gašpar Cimbal Project (SK), Weezdob Collective (PL), Fanfán Tulipán, Quattro Formaggi, Wunder Bar Band, Tres Quatros Quintet or Ostrich Quartet.
CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS IS MARCH 16, 2018, INCLUSIVE.
Music recordings and three band photos in print quality required as part of the application.
